Mask of the Bamana in Mali, which is used in the initiation ceremonies of the ‘N’tomo society’. Initiates are taught survival skills, social customs, and religious principles.
Of striking form with nine long vertical prongs, carved in hard, brown wood and dyed black - six holes are visible to the facial area and one each for the ears, the nose defined and beak like. Mounted on a contemporary stand.
